Captain America: Brave New World – A Confusing Mix of MCU Elements

Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World was expected to be a bold new chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but instead, it turned out to be a convoluted attempt at connecting past and present storylines. While it starts by linking itself to The Incredible Hulk and other Captain America films, the movie soon veers off into Eternals territory, leaving audiences with a tangled web of plotlines and numerous loose ends.

A Messy Narrative with No Clear Direction

One of the biggest flaws of Brave New World is its lack of a cohesive storyline. With more than four writers contributing to the script, the film struggles with consistency, failing to maintain a smooth flow. The result is a disjointed narrative that jumps between different themes and characters without giving them proper depth or resolution.

Marvel, once known for its meticulous planning and seamless storytelling, seems to be losing its grip on its own strategies and strengths. Instead of refining their storytelling approach, they appear to be stretching themselves too thin by incorporating too many elements without giving them proper focus.

Visuals and Action Sequences – A Saving Grace

Despite its narrative shortcomings, Captain America: Brave New World does deliver in terms of visual spectacle. The CGI is impressive, and the action sequences are well-choreographed, offering some thrilling moments. However, good CGI and well-executed fight scenes alone cannot save a film that lacks a strong screenplay and engaging storytelling.

Performances That Deserved a Better Script

One of the few redeeming aspects of the film is its cast.

  • Anthony Mackie delivers a commendable performance as Sam Wilson, fully embracing the mantle of Captain America. He brings depth to the character but is held back by the film’s inconsistent writing.

  • Harrison Ford, stepping into the role of President Thaddeus Ross, adds gravitas to the movie, though his character’s motivations remain somewhat unclear.

  • Danny Ramirez returns as Joaquin Torres, stepping into the role of the new Falcon. His performance is solid, though his character doesn’t get as much development as he deserves.

  • Carl Lumbly continues to shine as Isaiah Bradley, delivering an emotionally grounded performance.

  • Liv Tyler reprises her role as Betty Ross after more than a decade, though her role feels underutilized.

  • Tim Blake Nelson makes a return as Samuel Sterns (The Leader), but his character lacks the impact fans expected.

The actors put in solid performances, but unfortunately, their efforts are undermined by a weak script and inconsistent pacing.

Marvel Studios has a stacked lineup ahead, with several upcoming projects that could impact the events of Captain America: Brave New World:

  • Thunderbolts – This film, set to release in late 2025, might continue the storyline involving President Ross and some of the anti-hero elements introduced in Brave New World.

  • Avengers: The Kang Dynasty – With Kang the Conqueror still looming over the MCU, it remains to be seen how this film’s events will tie into the larger narrative.

  • Fantastic Four – Set for release in 2025, this film might provide clarity on some of the cosmic elements that Brave New World hinted at.

  • Shang-Chi 2 – Given that Brave New World draws some elements from Eternals, there is speculation that Marvel might use Shang-Chi’s sequel to further develop those connections.

Final Verdict: A Disappointing MCU Entry

Captain America: Brave New World had all the ingredients for a great superhero film—an iconic character, a strong cast, and high production values. However, the lack of a well-structured screenplay and a clear direction makes it a disappointing addition to the MCU. Marvel needs to refocus on what made its earlier films successful: strong storytelling, character development, and well-thought-out continuity. Without these elements, even the best visual effects and action sequences won’t be enough to keep fans invested.
